Cleaning firms warned: You spend too much on fuel

Cleaning companies have been warned that they are probably over-spending on diesel and petrol. Steve Clarke, general manager of The Fuelcard People, said:
“Any cleaning firm without a fuel card will be losing money, while even those who already have one may be missing benefits. Anyone who thinks that all fuel cards are the same is wrong and almost certainly over-pays as a consequence. Every day, thousands of cleaners’ vans and other vehicles are refuelled at pump prices, although discounts of 10p per litre and more are available. It is financial madness to pay for fuel without enjoying discount pricing.”

Cleaning tips for this winter
by Dolana Blount, Director of Regulatory Affairs and Senior Microbiologist at PURE Bioscience
With the swine flu vaccine inaccessible to many so far this year, the next best thing is disinfecting homes and workspaces to keep them virus free. However, there is a lot of misinformation about what kills H1N1 and what doesn't. For instance, popular alcohol-based hand sanitizers do not kill viruses - only bacteria. Although it's true that alcohol makes your hands inhospitable to viruses (reducing the amount of the virus that will cling to your hands), the threat of the virus remains.

Get your coffee fix without adding to landfill

Across the world we get through 400 billion cups of coffee every year whilst in the UK, our thirst for this favoured daily beverage results in a mountain of waste, 1.7 billion disposable paper cups, ending up in landfill annually.
The disposable coffee paper cup is in every sense, a landfill and environmental nightmare. The paper cups are generally non-recyclable due to a plastic resin coating applied during the manufacturing process and can take years to break down. In landfill, the paper component which decomposes anaerobically in the absence of oxygen, releases methane, a greenhouse gas over 20 times more potent at trapping heat in the atmosphere compared to CO2.

They say that a cleaner on the legal minimum wage of £5.80, working 40-hours a week, 52 weeks a year, would have to work more than 33 years to earn the annual pay package of the provost of University College London.

UK Government fails to accept Public Toilet Committee's recommendations

On Tuesday, the Government published its response to the Communities & Local Government Committee Report on the Provision of Public Toilets.
Published last October, the Report called on local authorities to reverse a decline in the number of public toilets. It argued that the Government should impose a duty on local authorities to consult with the local community to develop a public toilet strategy and thus ensure that more toilets were made available to the public. The Public Health Act 1936 gives Local Authorities the power to provide public toilets, but imposes no duty to do so. Partly as a consequence of this, the provision of public toilets varies enormously from one local authority to another.
