Welcome to the
Cleanzine - the original Cleaning & Hygiene industry e-news Read by industry professionals in 132 countries worldwide! In my leader last week I argued that we must continue with fortnightly (rather than revert to weekly) bin collections in the UK as I believe that unless we do something to reduce the amount of waste we send to landfill, there won't be anywhere to put it! John argued (privately) that even with only three of them at home now, sometimes at the end of the fortnight their bin's full, even though they recycle as much as possible. He advocates weekly collections. The press here has been full of stories on the issue over the past week and it's clear that people feel very strongly about it. What do you think? Our waste - and what to do with it - is a global problem and as Cleanzine has more than 80,000 readers in 148 countries, if at least one person from each country emails me with their views on how best (and how often) to deal with our waste, I should have sufficient to kick off a really good forum. Please do get in touch. What John and I both do agree on is the bad idea of the EU taxing road freight in the midst of a recession (see story below) - with member states having no obligation to reinvest the tax revenues in making road transport greener! It's just another tax then. Yours, This Week's News

EU to start taxing road freight to contain pollution EU member states have been given final approval to start applying the 'polluter-pays' principle when setting road tolls for heavy goods vehicles. But the freight sector is complaining of an additional burden as countries are not obliged to reinvest the tax revenues in greening road transport. HSS Outsource: time/money-saving solution for cleaning and FM contractors HSS, the national supplier of tool and equipment hire and related services, is launching HSS Outsource, an innovative new service that offers a long-term equipment hire solution and promises to help facilities managers save time and money when it comes to equipment management. The proposition launches first in the troubled cleaning equipment sector going to the heart of FM's everyday problems. A recent survey, sponsored by the company and in association with the Facilities Management Association, highlighted the excessive amount of time that facilities managers 'waste' tackling equipment related issues. The survey found that up to a day each week is spent dealing with the management of equipment and that more than one in five of their own service related issues are caused by equipment probl Mega I: RCM's new walk-behind scrubber-drier RCM's latest machine is part of the company's plan - announced in 2009 - to establish a Global RCM machines, services and innovation offer. Businesses overlooking financial cost of workplace injury and illness British businesses are losing their competitive edge because of a failure to tackle the risks of injury and illness in the workplace, the UK's leading professional health and safety body has warned. A survey, published by the Institution of Occupational Safety and Health, reveals that employers are underestimating the economic benefits of worker protection and are placing it low on their list of priorities. What exactly engages employees? A new Chartered Institute of Personnel & Development report published recently, delves deep into the issue of employee engagement. It acknowledges that employee engagement is an important driver of sustainable organisation performance, but goes further by exploring 'what' employees engage with and 'where' in the organisation their focus of engagement is located, or, what is their 'locus of engagement.' Locus of engagement: Understanding what employees connect with at work, produced for the CIPD by the Kingston Engagement Consortium, finds that despite the plethora of research around the issue of employee engagement, very little attention has as yet been paid to what exactly it is that employees engage with. An analysis of the research data provides evidence not only that employees engag MITIE wins integrated FM contract in Norway MITIE, has recently been awarded a seven-year integrated facilities management contract with the Norwegian Maritime Competence Centre in Alesund, Norway.
