Welcome to the
Cleanzine - the original Cleaning & Hygiene industry e-news Read by industry professionals in 148 countries worldwide!
Welcome to the 500th issue of Cleanzine, which I've worked out is the equivalent of a little over 41.5 years' publishing in monthly magazine terms! In that time we've grown from a 4,400 UK-reader e-zine to one with an 80,000-plus circulation and readers in 148 countries. Bearing in mind that the circulation is fully requested, that's an awful lot of readers who are keen to read about your latest product, piece of equipment or service, so do take advantage of this global platform of potential customers by regularly emailing us your news - it costs nothing other than a little of your time. It's actually our 10th birthday next February and we're marking this 'double whammy' celebration with a generous prize draw, announced in last week's issue. We're delighted to say that the winner of a year's free advertising in Cleanzine is Lisa Morantz, President of US-based Morantz Ultrasonics. Look out for the start of Lisa's campaign next year; because of the holidays our next issue will be broadcast on 12th January 2012. Our thanks go to Rob den Hertog, Senior Product Manager ISSA/Interclean Amsterdam, for doing the equivalent of drawing Lisa's name out of the hat. We had listed the entrants numerically and asked Rob to pick a number. He very cleverly used the calculation 8+9+10+11 May (5)+ 20+12 = 75 (Lisa's number) which just happen to remind us that this is when next year's ISSA/Interclean Amsterdam show takes place. It's not far off now and I for one can't wait! All that remains for me to say is Merry Christmas! We hope you enjoy whatever break you're able to take and that you stay safe and healthy - and that 2012 will bring some political stability, paid work for those seeking it and economic growth for the global community. Yours,

Women do better than men in 2011 jobs market despite public sector cutbacks The recession of 2008-9 is sometimes referred to as a 'mancession' in the UK because men were hit relatively hard when it came to jobs. Women accounted for only around a fifth of the fall in employment during the recession and only around a third of the rise in unemployment. But there is a widespread expectation that the opposite will occur in the wake of ongoing large scale public sector downsizing, given that two-thirds of public sector workers are women, and weak consumer demand in private sector services, especially retail, that employ lots of women in part-time jobs. Ecolab expands Brazil pest elimination business Ecolab announced this week that it has acquired the InsetCenter pest elimination business in Brazil. Sales of the acquired business are approximately $6 million. The business operations and staff will be integrated with Ecolab's existing Brazil Pest Elimination business. My daughter Chervana won a scholarship this year that enabled her to take an MSc at the University of Southampton - and, fed up with student accommodation, she decided to rent a house with a friend who goes out to work. The house was completely unfurnished apart from the white goods and when I asked what the pair would like for a housewarming gift, the request was for a Contico CVC vacuum cleaner, just like the one we have at home!
