Cleanzine - the original Cleaning & Hygiene industry e-news

Read by industry professionals in 148 countries worldwide!

Our newspapers here in the UK have been filled with stories in recent months regarding members of our armed forces returning from battle to inferior homes, inferior healthcare and totally inadequate compensation for horrendous injuries sustained - and the latter particularly so when compared with compensation awarded to some civilians because of perceived human rights infringements! And of course many of our servicemen and women have lost their jobs - either because they've been made redundant or because their injuries mean they can no longer carry out the work they were originally enlisted to do.

As you can imagine, I was delighted to see a company from our industry announce that it is handing a lifeline to people in this difficult situation by providing an opportunity to run a supported cleaning business.

OK, it's in the US, but I can see something similar working very well in the UK and other parts of the world. See 'The Cleaning Authority offers returning veterans great business opportunities' below for details.

Congratulations are also in order for the British Cleaning Council, which is celebrating its 30th Anniversary with a reception at the Houses of Parliament next Tuesday.

The BCC - currently Chaired by Mark Woodhead, Sales Director of Selden Research, was established to coordinate the affairs of the industry and to promote the important work it does, helping it gain the credibility it deserves. It now has 21 members - made up of various industry associations -and it is an important player in the global cleaning industry.

Unfortunately John and I cannot join our industry friends celebrating this landmark birthday in such an iconic building overlooking the Thames as we will be away at an exhibition but we will find time to raise a glass or two to the BCC's past achievements and wish it well for the future.

Yours,

How to beat the BIG boys - What the giants of the industry just don't get

Ed-Skellow.jpgby our US correspondent, Ed Selkow

I used to look forward to reading our trade journals. Services Magazine, Cleaning Management, Building Services Management and a couple long gone now. Those magazines weren't just bathroom reading for me, I would hang on every word, read every article and carefully read every single ad. Editors had names like Terry 'Five Coats' Wilhelm (forgive me Terry if I got your last name wrong, haven't seen your name in print for many years but I hope you made a good buck selling the magazine and are comfy in retirement).

Soapbox: Consider environmental impact when selecting wiping systems

by Kimberly-Clark Professional

When selecting the right wiper system for a given task, it's important to take into account its impact on the environment.

Did you know that reusable laundered shop towels are responsible for 30% more landfilled solid waste than their disposable counterparts?
