German engineering... but British marketing

* Coumbus-light-vac.jpg
It's just over a year since Shaun Bradbury of Lancashire-based cleaning consultancy the Wrennalls Group, brokered the deal which enables him to import Columbus Cleaning Machines from Germany - and thus this is the first UK Cleaning Show at which Shaun has demonstrated the machines. They were going down a storm - but as usual, Shaun had adopted a clever strategy to attract visitors to his stand, which meant that plenty of people saw the machines.

'Bin' making the most of the time at the show...

* Morclean.jpg
We didn't get to speak to the team on the Morclean stand until the final day, so busy were they every time we walked past.... So we weren't surprised when Managing Director Peter Morley (pictured) told us they'd had around seven good leads an hour, every hour.

And it wasn't just the Brits that came...

* Reinhard_and-son.jpg
Although many people say this is a UK show, visitors came from far and wide - and there were a number of foreign exhibitors too. Unger's Dave Rogers told us on the second day that they'd had visitors to the stand from as far afield as Sweden, Finland, Moscow and Australia - all interested in buying, rather than just window-shopping.

On the final day we bumped into our friends Daniel Knittler (left) and Reinhard Knittler, who produce German cleaning magazine ReinigungsMarkt. They told us they had enjoyed a productive three days at the show, speaking to most of the exhibitors and collecting information on new products and services to write about in forthcoming issues of their magazine.

Never pump again!

* Green-Gorilla.jpg
Another name we hadn't come across before was Green Gorilla Europe. There was quite a crowd watching Magnus Jonatansson, who hails from Iceland, demonstrate the Green Gorilla Advanced Spray System - and when we realised how the system worked, we could understand why.

Magnus explained that his company, Fremst ehf Iceland, has the exclusive rights to sell and distribute the product in Europe, for US manufacturer ForeFront Product Design.

Osprey to supply lightweight 8 bar steam cleaner

* Osprey-new-machine.jpg
John and I have always been impressed with OspreyDeepclean products and when we were at Pulire, Verona last year, we were stopped in our tracks by the machines on the Maxima Advanced Solutions stand, so perhaps we shouldn't have been surprised to see Giuseppe Codemo (left in picture) with Thomas Stucken and learn that they have struck a deal!

Tersano (International) Srl introduce ozone cleaning

* ozone-unit.jpg
Although the sanitising power of ozone (O3) has been known about and utilised since the early 1900's, it was not until Tersano was able to re-engineer the technology for commercial use that the full cleaning, sanitising and environmental benefits were realised.

Hydro Systems Europe shows new prototypes

Hydro-Systems.jpg
Hydro Systems Europe’s Alistair Blair-Davies talked us through the attributes of the two new prototypes on the stand – one offering flexible dispensing and dosing and the other being a lower cost version of the company’s top performing foaming system – both of which should be available within the next few months. He said feedback from visitors to the stand had been good.

Brightwell Dispensers launches Eco Mix and Eco Shot

Suzanne-Brightwell.jpg
So the secret is out… Brightwell is launching a new range of chemical dosing and dilution systems, Ecomix and Ecoshot, as
Suzanne Gardent, pictured, explained. “Economix is a proprtioner,” she explained. “Connected to mains water, it creates a vauum and dilutes a pre-determined ratio of chemical into a final solution, ready to use. Ecoshop is a manual dosing system, dosing a specific volume or shot of concentrated chemical into a spray bottle, bucket or sink. Although different systems, the two provide an efficient, flexible, on-site system, which enables the user to create ready-to-use chemicals from concentrates.

Cleanzine - the original Cleaning & Hygiene industry e-news

Read by industry professionals in 148 countries worldwide!

It was interesting to see that ‘Effortless Cleaning’ was one of the categories in this year’s global Electrolux Design Lab competition and while I’ve not yet had a chance to look at all of the 1700 submissions, one that I have seen is ‘Smart-Floor.'

Considered by the judges to be amongst the 100+ best ideas, Smart-Floor is a self-cleaning, anti-slip, three-ply floor with in-built bacteria repellent, which is also porous to allow spillages to drip through where they are absorbed by a material in the core. A vacuum system powered by solar panels and installed in the skirting boards provides constant suction power through special fins, sucking up dust in the air and thus cleaning the air in the room.

I was thinking that while the competition is still in its early stages, it could just be that a product such as this could end up winning and thus go into manufacture, perhaps one day changing the world of cleaning as we know it and possibly forcing floor cleaning machine manufacturers to rethink their product offering completely. I've often wondered what the world might look like in the future, but have to confess that I'd never really thought about the cleaning side of it. This competition has now got me wondering and I'm really looking forward to checking out some of the other designs that have been put forward. As they say, "Watch this space!"

At the Steptoe seminar on the new Biocidal Products Regulation, (EU) No 528/2012 (BPR) held two weeks ago, the European Commission confirmed its intention to seek accelerated agreement on a legislative amendment to the BPR. If prompt consensus can be reached with the Council and the European Parliament, the changes will take effect before the new regime becomes applicable on 1st September 2013. As with REACH, the new biocides regime is relevant not only to manufacturers and formulators of biocides, but downstream users as well.

Cleanliness can improve academic achievement and enhance student retention rates

As competition between universities increases in light of reductions in Higher Education funding, outsourcing specialist Resource GB is urging universities to consider the importance of cleanliness in creating a positive and productive environment for their students. It has a point... A recent survey conducted by Resource GB identified that students drew a direct link between their own academic achievement and the cleanliness of their campus and halls of residence. And the results back the findings of previous research conducted in the US and Canada.

How to tell if a hotel is going green

Believe it or not, Summer will soon be here and many people are starting to plan their holidays now. One thing that more and more people look for when they travel is to stay in a hotel that is taking step to be greener. But how can you tell? After all, according to one travel expert, on one of his travels he found the only thing green about the ‘green’ hotel he had selected was that "they gave to a local Green charity.”

Jennifer Meek, the Director of Marketing for Enviro-Solutions, a leading manufacturer of green cleaning chemicals, says just by asking a few questions or doing a little probing, customers can find out if a hotel is truly green or just doing a little ‘greenwashing.’

A rare work ethic!

Work has clearly not been like a prison sentence for John though, who in 44 years of service, has, incredibly, never taken a day off sick! He is shown here (left) with Scott Smith of the Federation of Window Cleaners.
