Outbreaks of norovirus and bird flu over the past five years have also served to highlight the importance of hand hygiene in containing infectious diseases. Carpets versus hard floors: what do you consider to be more hygienic? Ed: We recently published an item entitled ‘Studies help settle great debate' in which we reported on the results of studies into the use of carpeting in US hospitals and their contribution to a reduction in hospital acquired infections. This has started a debate on our Facebook page and I’d be really interested in seeing what your feelings are about this argument. This is the debate so far: The eight germiest public places... Welcome to the
Cleanzine - the original Cleaning & Hygiene industry e-news Read by industry professionals in 148 countries worldwide! Regular readers of Cleanzine will be well aware of the issues I have with tradespeople, who never quite seem to be able to do what they’re supposed to do. Feeling thoroughly exasperated as a result of their incompetence and inability to meet easy deadlines on a couple of recent refurbishment projects, I decided it would be quicker, easier and less expensive to finish the work myself. Never one to dwell on the negative, I decided to use this as an opportunity to trial some of the products and equipment that I so often write about, which are available to or used by people in this industry - and although in some cases it’s involved some hard work, it’s been both interesting and rewarding! Over the coming weeks you’ll be able to read about my experiences using a Prochem carpet cleaning machine with the company’s ‘Natural’ range of environmentally-friendly chemicals, as well as the professional services of Chris Straker – proprietor of Straker Eco Carpet & Rug Care, Solution Cornwall’s chemicals and the service provided by Nick Vousden-White and the wonderful Grout Shield from Kilrock Products – amongst many others. And if there was ever a way of underlining the importance of schemes such as the Cleaning & Hygiene Suppliers Association’s Manufacturing Standard Accreditation Scheme for plastic refuse sacks, which ensures that sacks produced by scheme members are of a certain quality, then look no further! The path outside together with my car, my porch and much of the downstairs part of my house, bear testament to the damage inferior grade bags can wreak! In my defence they were not bags I’d bought, but some that had been left by one of the builders I was complaining about at the start of this leader (now why doesn’t that surprise me?) Please get in touch either by emailing me or posting a comment on our Facebook page. www.facebook.com/Cleanzine You can also follow us on Twitter @cleanzine Yours, This Week's News
Warning: your open-plan office can make you ill Don't blame other commuters if you catch a cold this Winter: blame the people who designed your office. According to a study published in the current issue of Ergonomics, workplace layout has a surprising effect on rates of sick leave.
Four Stockholm University scientists examined data from nearly 2000 employees working in seven different types of office. Key to their research was the number of short and long-term illnesses the employees had, as well as their total days off sick each year. New adjustable 3M Scotch-Brite Fryer and Kitchen Cleaning Tool tackles toughest tasks Removing baked-on dirt and hard-to-reach grease from commercial grills, ovens and fryers is one of the toughest jobs in the kitchen - which is why the new 3M Scotch-Brite Fryer and Kitchen Cleaning Tool is cleverly designed to give more power to the cleaner's elbow.

StepNpull marches into Europe to combat effects of dirty washroom users Estimates vary but it is widely accepted that at least half of those using public toilets don't wash their hands while many of those that do, don't clean them properly. Typically we carry between 10,000 to a million germs on clean hands - imagine what type of nasty germs you can pick up in the public toilets?
New StepNpull is a potentially life saving device, as it eliminates the unnecessary spread of bacteria from door handles. Revolutionising the way we open any door - including public toilets, it eradicates the need to touch the dreaded door handle by letting you exit the door using just your foot. Some, unbelievably, are happy to pay pump prices. For anything else they buy, from tyres to teabags, they shop around for bargains.
