To begin, let me share with you the email I sent to Doug Cooke and John Findlater, who were instrumental in organising last Friday's Cleaning & Support Services Association's Annual Luncheon at London's Savoy Hotel:

"Just back at my desk & I find I'm still glowing at the memory of a fantastic day on Friday. Is it just me or was this the most successful & enjoyable 'annual bash' the CSSA has ever staged? I can't quite work out if it was a case of absence having made the heart grow fonder or whether everyone was so surprised at how much you'd achieved in such a short space of time, that we were all a bit knocked out by it... Well done & thank you so much for inviting me!"

If you're puzzled by my comments, I should explain that I've been lucky enough to have been attending the CSSA's annual gatherings for more than two and a half decades. Sadly, they disappeared from the calendar when the CSSA briefly merged into a larger group and we thought we'd seen the end of them. With the CSSA's relaunch in January 2016 I'm sure many, like me, were hoping that the annual gatherings would also be resurrected but none of us could have envisaged that they'd be back with such a bang. Someone told me there were 400 of us!

Not bad for an organisation that's only been back up and running for 18 months then - and if this is an indication of what the CSSA can achieve when it's 'on a mission', I have high hopes of it signing up the rest of the best of the UK's contractors before too long. To find out about joining, email: [email protected]

Around 15 years ago, at another industry dinner, host British Institute of Cleaning Science - following a challenge by then BICSc president Professor David Bellamy - started working with JohnsonDiversey to promote environmental awareness and cleanliness in our nation's primary schools. The initiative ran for some years and I'm sure that many of the lessons learned by the young people involved have been carried with them through life. A friend is involved in a project with a similar goal and has asked for your input into the programme being put together. There are just eight questions at: www.surveymonkey.co.uk/r/H8ZFHQS so if you have a minute to spare we'd be most grateful...
