Community hub celebrates five star hygiene rating

* Starlight_Cafe_Manager.jpgA community hub in Bromsgrove is celebrating after receiving a five star rating in a recent inspection by Worcestershire County Council. The Starlight Cafe in Humphrey Avenue, Charford, which is run by bdht, Bromsgrove's largest provider of affordable housing, was awarded full marks in its most recent assessment last month.

Worcestershire County Council's environmental health inspector sprung a surprise inspection on the cafe, which is adjacent to the Starlight Community Centre and offers not only a fully functioning community cafe and an external buffet service, but a range of services for local people. The inspector assessed the facilities and questioned staff on their food hygiene knowledge.

All staff at the cafe receive thorough training on food hygiene, correct use of equipment and customer service.

Manager of the Starlight Centre, Darran Moore, (pictured) says: "We are really pleased and extremely proud of all of our staff here at Starlight for enabling us to achieve this excellent rating.

"We take health & safety very seriously here and adhere to strict guidelines to ensure our hygiene standards are second to none. All of our staff receive thorough in-house training.

"I would like to particularly recognise our volunteer Katrina Jones, who fielded all of the inspector's questions expertly. Our certificate is now proudly displayed in the window!"

The Starlight Centre offers a range of courses and services, such as youth groups, disability youth groups, autism and Asperger syndrome groups, weekly craft groups, drug and alcohol recovery sessions and much more. It also offers courses run by HoW college.

The centre is staffed by a team of dedicated volunteers, made up of former service users and people from the local community, some of whom have learning difficulties and gain valuable work-based and life skills through their roles.
