Firm fined over car-park flytipping
A Coventry firm has been ordered to pay out over £1,300 after waste was found dumped in a city car park. Magistrates heard that earlier this year, a quantity of waste was found on Wellington Street Car Park. Some of the waste carried an address of a restaurant in Longford Road, named Nashaa and the rest of the waste was consistent with commercial waste from such a premises.
When Council officers investigated, they asked to see business waste documents and interviewed a director. They found the waste had been removed by an unknown carrier with no checks carried out and the restaurant could not say whether the firm was licensed.
Guilty pleas were entered to three charges on behalf of the company, which was fined £500, ordered to pay £105 in compensation, a £50 victim surcharge and costs of £720.
"Flytipping has a terrible impact on the city, local communities and residents and as a Council we work very hard to try and bring those responsible to justice and show that it will not be tolerated," said Cllr Abdul Khan, cabinet member policing and equalities at Coventry City Council.
"Thanks to the hard work and dedication of the officers involved, the guilty party in this case has been made to pay and it sends out a message to others that they must obey the law and make sure their waste is disposed of safely and responsibly."
