Extra funding for emergency pre-monsoon cleaning awarded to Kochi Corp. of India

The 74 divisions of the Kochi Corporation - the body responsible for municipal cleaning in the area that Wikipedia says is the sixth most popular tourist destination in India - have been awarded extra funding worth almost £13,500 for emergency pre-monsoon cleaning this year.

Local bodies have been instructed to take urgent steps to start pre-monsoon cleaning within two weeks and as an incentive, a further cash sum will be awarded to the local body that achieves the highest standards of cleaning and hygiene, reports The Times of India.

Cleaning and awareness programmes will also be started in all civic bodies in the district. Kudumbashree (local community development workers) will visit households as part of the campaign with the aim of educating them in how to ensure everything stays cleaner and more hygienic for longer.

The decision to increase the funding to each division from Rs 10,000 to Rs 25,000, was taken at a high-level meeting last week, which was convened by chief minister Oommen Chandy and attended by Mayor Tony Chammany. The funding will come from the National Rural Health Mission and Suchitwa Mission, which will each provide Rs 10,000 to each division, and the corporation, which will give Rs 5,000.
