An article in the news last week highlighted the enormous difference screening expectant mothers for GBS (Group B Streptococcus) can make to the health of newborns – and the comments beneath the article (which I read online) all called for screening to be offered in the UK, as, I gather, it is in such countries as the US, Germany, France and Spain.

The article focused on the results of a scheme trialled in London’s Northwick Park Hospital and the results echoed those of trials during which incoming patients, visitors – and, I believe – staff were tested for MRSA, the idea being that carriers could be treated with antibiotics to prevent further problems down the line.

The NHS decision-makers were, as you can imagine, slated for denying blanket testing because of costs, but I wonder whether the growing resistance to antibiotics and the fear that one day they will be useless, has anything to do with it?

Proper cleaning, as we all know, can save lives…
