CRI puts in top performance at the National Theatre

Cleaning Research International has recently prepared a cleaning specification for the National Theatre and assisted the facility's management through the tender process.

Situated on the South Bank of the Thames, the National has three theatres and its 'front of house' facilities comprise various restaurants, cafes and bars, exhibition areas and a bookshop. Backstage, another world exists.   Here you will find an armoury, wig and costume makers and scenery workshops, not to mention dressing rooms, rehearsal rooms and sound studios.

In a process that can take two to three months, CRI first assessed the varied requirements of the complex and produced a detailed cleaning specification designed to ensure that the NT continues to provide a clean and welcoming environment for audiences, actors and backstage staff alike. Next, in collaboration with the NT's Director of Catering, Robyn Lines, the tender process to find a suitable cleaning contractor was put into operation.

Once the bids were received, CRI undertook an evaluation process so that a number of contractors could be shortlisted for interview - at which CRI's specialist expertise was made available to the NT panel.

"Because of the complexity of the building, great care was necessary to ensure that the requirements of all the different users were satisfactorily met, explains CRI's Dr Eric Brown.   "With this in mind, we assessed each area individually, mindful of the fact that the successful contractor would need to exercise a considerable degree of flexibility to meet the demands of this dynamic environment."

This is another example of the wide variety of sites, of hugely varying requirements, with which CRI has become involved.   These have included airports, the British Library, numerous universities and colleges and several Local Authority facilities.
