Chinese cleaning industry rallies round to help earthquake victims
Automobiles on the street were sounding their air sirens and the office was in silence, writes Jimmy King, Editor of China Clean Publication (CCP). On 19th May, the China Clean crew, together with many of the Chinese people, stood in silence for three minutes from 2:28 pm to mark the exact time the devastating earthquake shook Sichuan Province.
"The earthquake is one of the worst catastrophes in contemporary China, but it demonstrates the Chinese nation's indomitable spirit. We wish to extend our sympathy to the victims.
"Donations and supplies are coming from every corner of the country and of all walks of life. In the rescue work, we are happy to see what the cleaning industry has done. As victims and rescue workers are in urgent need of public toilets, Shanghai City Appearance & Environmental Sanitation Association shipped 10 mobile toilets to the earthquake zone in the early morning on 16th May. At 4.00 am on 20th May, Shanghai Urban Construction & Communications Committee sent eight sweepers and two excrement collection vehicles to Chengdu. The city is now cleaning all the debris and garbage after the quake. Huang Xinghua, deputy director of Shanghai City Appearance & Environmental Bureau, stated: 'it only took us eight hours to arrange the vehicles from the moment we got this task. These 10 vehicles are the most advanced ones in China.'
"CCP will also be actively involved in rescue work in its own way. From now on, 10% of any subscription will be donated to the victims. We hope victims will survive the hardship with our little help. The concerted effort of all Chinese people will surely help resist any difficulty.
"Many children were orphaned in the disaster. They were deprived of the happiest time in their life. They have to bear with the pain that adults can hardly bear. But they are still lucky as long as they are alive to build up new life. We are particularly mourning for the dead. The sparks of these lives were extinguished by the disaster. However these lives are now shining in Heaven, where eternal peace prevails.
"This very moment makes me recall Eric Clapton's Grammy awarded song Tears in Heaven as the lyric goes: Beyond the door there's peace I'm sure, and I know there'll be no more tears in heaven."
