Infection Control specialists team up for hospital infections TV documentary

"Tackling MRSA and other hospital related infections" is one of a series of documentaries to be aired via Sky TV and simultaneously broadcast on the NHS TV web site.

Steam decontamination equipment manufacturer OspreyDeepclean teamed with healthcare cleaning specialist CK Group for a long day's filming and interviews for the documentary that airs Thursday 23rd July on Sky channel 166 7:30pm, with a simultaneous broadcast on NHS247 where it will play for 12 months. The documentary seeks to educate and inform both NHS staff as well as members of the public as to what measures are being put in place to help combat Healthcare Associated Infections (HCAIs).

Many aspects of infection control were filmed on the day, including daily ward decontamination, ultrasonic and steam decontamination of patient equipment, airborne bacteria control, and infection control matting, among others.

The great advantage that this new approach to controlling HCAIs has over traditional chemical wipe regimes, against which MRSA has evolved so much resistance, is that they are equally effective against infectious bacteria such as E. coli, as well as the harder to eradicate spore-based infections such as C. difficile.

'Capture, remove, and safely dispose' is an effective method of dealing with infectious spores, and Dry Steam Vapour decontamination quickly and efficiently achieves this end, whilst at the same time quickly destroying susceptible bacteria present. This fast daily decontamination method also removes the soil and nutrients that might otherwise sustain live bacteria to spread and recolonise.

Other methodologies shown also included ultrasonic decontamination, which is very effective and completely thorough, as the object being treated is fully immersed in a special ultrasonic tank. The documentary shows a patient wheelchair being lowered into the tank where ultrasound waves not only dislodge any contaminants, but also blast out of existence any live bacteria or spores present.

Experts from each of the two companies also spoke about their firm's experience in the NHS relevant to the new approach being made to tackle infections, and the rationale behind the strategies being presented in the documentary.

Other documentaries to be broadcast in the series will include: Improved Food Services, Improving Prescribing Formats, Energy Efficiency and Reducing Carbon Footprints, Employment Law, Sustainable Hospital Design, Modernizing Diagnostics, Implementing RFID and Bar Coding, Intellectual Property and Improving Patient Care with Effective Integrated IT Solutions.
