Cromwell uses MP's Earth Day visit to highlight range of environmental issues

* NigelAdamsMP_visit.jpgCromwell Polythene's managing director James Lee highlighted a wide range of environmental issues when local MP Nigel Adams visited the company's Sherburn headquarters, near Leeds, this week.

The Member of Parliament for Selby and Ainsty, who has consistently championed local businesses and, as Chairman of the All Party Parliamentary Biomass Group, is an enthusiastic supporter of biomass, appropriately chose April 22nd, Earth Day 2016, for his visit. The first Earth Day, more than 25 years ago, is widely credited with launching the modern environmental movement.

During his visit, during which Mr Adams agreed to lend his support to the all-party parliamentary packaging group, James highlighted a number of areas in which the government's assistance would be helpful.

"I explained Cromwell's part in the UK packaging industry, which contributes £12bn to the UK economy and employs 85,000 people, more than the gas, oil, or pharmaceutical sectors." He says. "I also took the opportunity to highlight how packaging actually saves non-renewable resources, far greater than those used to make the packaging itself.

"Our very broad discussion ranged from how modern, lightweight packaging contributes to the minimisation of food waste throughout the UK supply chain, to the circular economy and the importance of waste as a resource. I also took the opportunity to suggest how the government can assist the waste management sector through the implementation of cohesive, nationwide collection systems, reducing the present 300 or so systems to around 10.

"It was a really positive meeting and I was greatly encouraged by Mr Adams willingness to take on board such a diverse range of topics - from waste to security of energy supply, from carbon reduction targets to the well-meaning, but mistaken imposition of the carrier bag tax."
