Derek Marsden
We learned last week that cleaning industry stalwart, Derek Marsden, 90, died peacefully on 9th March 2022 at Hutton Manor Care Home in Leeds. His funeral took place in April.
A lecturer at Leeds College of Building until his retirement, Derek trained hundreds of students in the City & Guilds 764 Cleaning Certificate and the British Institute of Cleaning Science's Cleaning Operator Proficiency Certificate.
Derek was a huge supporter of the Institute, serving as a member of the Training & Education Committee for some two decades during which time he wrote and delivered BICSc qualifications. A member of the Yorkshire Branch committee and later the North East Region, (where he was Treasurer) he later became a BICSc assessor and moderator, putting trainees through their paces in neighbouring colleges and in-company BICSc training centres as well as those detained in Her Majesty's Prisons.
In 1987, Derek was awarded the Eric Hill Memorial Medal for his contribution to training and education.
