SOAPBOX: "More funding needed"
Gavin Graveson, senior executive vice president Northern Europe Zone, for resource management specialist Veolia, comments on the UK Government's granting of extra power for the Environment Agency to tackle illegal waste crime.
"Whilst we welcome (the) measures which are definitely a step in the right direction in the fight against waste crime, the Government must be prepared to give not only more powers but more money to those enforcing the rules.
"Overall this is a £1 billion illegal industry and only a fraction of what's needed is being allocated to bring these criminals to justice, when every pound spent on stopping waste crime brings an immediate return on investment."
