Increased fines to help Haringey crack down on rubbish dumping
Residents and businesses that dump rubbish in London's Haringey could now face fines of up to £1,000 as the council intensifies its efforts to combat waste dumping after calls from the community for tougher action. The 150% rise in higher-rate penalties serves as a stark deterrent, highlighting the council's commitment to ensuring a clean and safe environment for all.
Last year over 8,000 residents and businesses took part in the council's waste survey. A massive 96% of participants agreed that fines should be imposed for fly-tipping, while 94% supported similar penalties for dog fouling and littering.
Littering will also attract a maximum fine of £500 - an increase of more than 230%.
While the majority of residents, landlords and businesses strive to keep the borough clean, the increase in fines will enable the council to take stronger action against those who commit this serious offence and negatively impact the community. The tougher sanctions address the growing problem of illegal waste disposal.
Every month thousands of residents use the council's bulky waste collection service or visit the Recycling & Reuse Centre in Wood Green to dispose of their waste.
Haringey's Enforcement Team regularly patrols the borough and conducts duty of care visits to local businesses. The team also investigates reports from residents who provide evidence of dumping in their neighbourhoods.
"I'm really pleased the Government has allowed councils to increase fines for dumping," says Cllr Seema Chandwani, Cabinet Member for Tackling Inequality and Resident Services. "Residents are sick and tired of seeing waste dumped around our lovely borough and strongly support tougher action. Working with them, we want to tackle this challenge head-on and ensure that public spaces remain free from litter and waste.
"We hope these increased penalties will act as a deterrent and punish people who commit this awful crime. Increasing the value of fines is just one of the measure the council is implementing to take a stronger stance against dumping in the borough."
