It's always frustrated me (and I know I'm not alone) that we - those in our industry - are the only ones who seem to sing our praises. Very few people who aren't involved, actually understand the crucial role good cleaning plays in keeping us all safe. If the world's cleaners downed tools one day, just imagine the chaos! But it goes beyond that, doesn't it? We actually help preserve life, since without cleaning, we become ill, and some of us will die.
This idea took on a whole different meaning a few days ago when the headlines briefly sang the praises of Weymouth man - 38yr old Jack McDermott - who used his jet wash to extinguish the fire when a woman's car engine burst into flames on the M25 motorway as he was driving past on his way to work. After screeching to a halt and dealing with the fire, he stayed with the woman until the fire service arrived, even letting the officers use his equipment to cool the car's engine. He says that what made his efforts even more rewarding was learning that his quick thinking had saved the woman's important, very personal belongings that were in the boot, which would have gone up in flames had the car been left to burn.
Jack normally uses his jet washing equipment to clean roofs, driveways, patios and windows, but never to clean cars - or put out fires in them. I'll bet that when he set up 'Jack's Jurassic Jet Wash', he never dreamed of using his equipment as a fire extinguisher!
I spend a lot of time on cleaning companies' websites and had a chuckle at how this particular use of his equipment could be used to enhance his site and perhaps bring in some new business for him. He certainly deserves it, don't you think? It would have been so easy just to carry on driving, but his quick thinking and selflessness have turned him into something of a hero. I like that!
