When the Bovaer scandal broke towards the back end of 2024, I resolved to buy organic dairy products in future, or not buy them at all. if you missed it, Bovaer's a feed additive used to reduce methane emissions from cows. It was slipped into the feed without most of us being aware, has approval in around 70 countries and in October 2025 was made compulsory on Danish farms with more than 50 cows. Some farmers are on record as saying that the feed's caused unpleasant health issues and even death for some of their cows - although I've not been unable to uncover scientific studies so I'll leave you to judge for yourself how widespread these issues may be.

* CZ-LEADER-PIC-4TH-JUNE.jpegIn my view though, the more natural the better - cows and everything else on this planet are made the way they are for a reason, so I hunted around for an organic produce supplier and found one that delivers over much of the UK.

So began my relationship with The Modern Milkman and I have to say I'm feeling much better for it. As well as the taste and quality of all the many products I've tried, all the dairy comes in glass bottles and jars which I wash when empty and leave out for collection. As well as being better for the planet, this means that the produce actually tastes better too as it's not being stored in plastic, (and no, they're not giving me free supplies for saying this. They don't even know I'm saying it).

It gets better... As you'll see from my picture, the company offers a doorstep recycling service too! Individual bags are supplied for soft plastics, textiles, electronics and toys and the cost is minimal. The service doesn't add to extra miles on the road for either the delivery drivers or we householders and it saves those who don't drive and thus cannot take this type of waste to the civic amenity tip, from having to send recyclables to landfill unnecessarily.

I think this is a brilliant idea!

As you're aware, Cleanzine's readers are spread around the globe. If you have experience of a similar service or knowledge of a company that's 'thought outside the box' in such a clever way, whether in the UK or anywhere else, I'd love to hear about it...
