CCBC reports highest-ever quarter for food waste recycling tonnage

Caerphilly County Borough Council has reported its highest-ever quarterly food waste recycling tonnage. Between April and June 2026, the Welsh Council collected 1,574 tonnes of food waste for recycling, representing a 10% increase compared with the same period last year.

All food waste collected for recycling in the Borough is currently processed through anaerobic digestion, where it is converted into renewable energy. Up to 90% of the energy generated through the process can be exported to the National Grid or used locally. In addition to generating energy, the process produces compost and a nutrient-rich liquid fertiliser.

The record-breaking figures follow a series of initiatives aimed at improving recycling performance across the county borough, including the introduction of free food waste caddy liners, the extended use of Section 46 of the Environmental Protection Act 1990, and the deployment of a dedicated team of recycling advisors
