A spokesman for officebroker.com said: “It’s a fun study but there is a serious side to it too – we are hoping workers will feel more focused and alert thanks to the oxygen the plants will be releasing on their desks. Also because they are bringing in the plants from their homes we hope they will help them feel relaxed and more able to work.”

A male sales worker has already reaped the benefits, saying his plant has really helped him deal with the stresses of his role. “I used to get really irate when deals didn’t come together or when things didn’t go according to plan,” he says. “I used to rant and rave but now I just have a chat with my spider plant and I immediately feel much better.”

Chris Bonnett of GardeningExpress.co.uk who came up with the idea and donated some plants, says they are excellent at purifying the air. “Several scientific studies have proven that plants are fantastic natural air purifiers. Not only do they release oxygen but they also absorb toxins from the atmosphere. We wanted to help businesses by offering to help them make their offices a happier and healthier place for their teams to work. I’m thrilled that officebroker.com has become the first business to pilot our plants at work scheme.”

All I can say is, don’t laugh until you’ve tried it!
