Welcome to the third of our daily bulletins from the ISSA/Interclean exhibition in Amsterdam, through which we’re attempting to bring you a flavour of the show, together with information on some of the best new products we’re uncovering as we go.

When I tell people from outside the industry that I’m visiting Amsterdam for an exhibition, I tend to get a, “Well it’s alright for some” type of reaction; they seem to think that I’m swanning around having fun and not working very hard at all. If only they knew! John and I cover miles during these events – as our aching feet already (after just two days) attest, but I do feel rather lucky in as much as having been on the other side of things, I’m aware that it’s harder to work on the stands. You’re on your feet all day selling to people, demonstrating equipment, putting packs of leaflets together and restocking sample displays, sometimes having too many stand visitors to look after at once and others, hanging around and trying to entice passers-by to come and talk to you about your products or services (it’s not considered professional to sit unless you’re with a customer) which makes your feet and legs ache even more than if you’re able to walk around. Plus it’s pretty frustrating to be left wondering at what’s going on at the other stands, unable to leave your own to go and investigate.

* Gangnam.jpgBut it’s not all hard work. I write this having finished the day over a cold beer and a much needed sit down with Sabine Paul on the Hako stand, before heading across to Unger’s 50th birthday celebrations, where cocktails and live music were the order of the day. Two of the guests – from South Korea – had the place in uproar, singing live and doing a brilliant version of ‘Gangnam Style’. Hall 1 at the RAI will never be the same again!

Then it was on to a tour of the Heineken brewery courtesy of our friends at Vax Commercial, to see how this world famous beer is manufactured, before an enjoyable dinner in the brewery itself. So no – it’s not all hard work, but what we do is on very little sleep indeed…

Before I start talking about the new products we saw yesterday, those of you who know John McCormick who’s been in the industry for years in several different guises, will not be surprised at his reaction when I told him yesterday morning that I’d inadvertently promoted him to managing director of Dowding & Plummer, by mistakenly captioning an image of him demonstrating the new Victor LMX Excel floor cleaning machine, saying it was Barney Dowding instead. “Well, I’ll have to tell Barney I need a pay rise then!” he quipped!

So what else did we see yesterday that excited us?
