Indian Railways outsources mechanised cleaning at 12 ECR stations

* patna-jctn.jpgIndian Railway authorities in Patna, the capital of the Bihar state - North East India; have outsourced mechanised cleaning work to private contractors at 12 East Central Railway stations. The contractors will not only carry out cleaning services, but will provide basic amenities to passengers too.

Arvind Rajak, ECR’s chief public relations officer, told Times of India that cleaning work will be carried out at Muzaffarpur, Darbhanga, Dhanbad, Raxaul, Bettiah, Sitamarhi, Bapudham Motihari, Sugauli, Parasnath, Sakri and Jayanagar junctions. Agencies will ensure that station platforms, waiting rooms and lavatories are cleaned daily.

A contract has also been finalised for cleaning work at Patna Station, one of the most crowded stations in the country, at the cost of Rs 5.42 crore for two years.

To combat problems with litter, railway authorities have hired another private agency to remove and collect litter at 32 ECR stations, including Patna Junction. Agency staff will collect litter from platforms and incoming trains and rail staff will check cleanliness regularly to guarantee the smooth running of the new system.

Railway staff have been asked to ensure that coaches are attended properly… ‘erring’ workers face the threat of fines.
