One of the first assignments I had to undertake when I joined the publication Cleaning & Hygiene Today in 1992, was write up a visit my then colleague had made to Staples Disposables a few weeks previously. My introduction into the cleaning industry was a fascinating one as I’d had no idea until then about how cleaning chemicals were formulated or how important it was to use them (and dilute them) according to the manufacturer’s instructions.

It wasn’t until I visited 3M's technical centre some time later that I got first-hand experience of this, when I had the chance to experiment with some cleaning chemicals and a mop, and saw for myself how difficult the job can become when you try and achieve a better result by overdosing on the chemical.

Those who think cleaning is easy and that people don’t need to be trained, need to think again!

What caused me to reminisce about my early days in the industry? Rumours that Staples Disposables was being sold. I’ve just spoken to Andrew Staples, the managing director of the company, who assures me that it will be very much ‘business as usual’ for customers. The full story is below.

Look out for more breaking industry news in next week’s issue!

Finally, if you’re one of our 100,000-plus readers who’ve had to wait longer than usual over the past couple of weeks for your issue of Cleanzine to arrive, please accept our apologies. We’re just getting to grips with our new list filtration and distribution software which will eventually improve the speed and efficiency of distribution, but which is currently in the early stages. We’re happy to say that things should be back to normal by next week.
