Welcome to the
Cleanzine - the original Cleaning & Hygiene industry e-news Read by industry professionals in 148 countries worldwide! A friend told me about a snippet he'd read in the newspaper this week, about how entertainer Paul O'Grady (perhaps better known to some as drag queen Lily Savage) hasn't forgotten his roots. Apparently Paul used to be a cleaner - and now when he stays in a hotel, before he leaves his room, he tidies the bathroom and pulls the duvet up on the bed to make the room look neater. He also leaves an envelope with some money in it and a thank you note. "They come in and say 'that's nice' and it makes them feel better," he says. Nice eh? I always make sure the cleaner has a clear run whenever I stay in a hotel. Indeed one of my 'things' is to tell the receptionist when I check in to ask the housekeeping staff not to make up my bed. Unless it's a duvet I only go around untucking it before climbing in anyway, so what's the point in adding to a cleaner's already busy workload by insisting that it's remade every day? Cleaning isn't the best job in the world and although it's something I've never done professionally (although I'm a BICSc qualified cleaner), I'm sure it must make an enormous difference to the cleaner's day to be acknowledged and thanked by members of the public for a difficult job well done. If you don't normally do it, why not start now? And talking of acknowledging cleaners... congratulations to Dublin-based Cagney Contract Cleaning for scooping three awards at the Irish Contract Cleaning Association's Cleaning Industry Awards. What an achievement! You can read more about the awards below. And do remember, if you have a success story you'd like to share with our 80,000-plus readers around the world - whichever one of the 148 countries Cleanzine reaches, that you happen to be living in, do please send it in. It doesn't cost you anything and if you don't have an awards programme in your country, at least you'll know you'll be getting a mental 'pat on the back' from Cleanzine's readers. Yours,
