Welcome to the
Cleanzine - the original Cleaning & Hygiene industry e-news Read by industry professionals in 148 countries worldwide! The National Institute for Health & Care Excellence issued new guidelines yesterday in an attempt to reduce the incidences of healthcare acquired infections – saying it’s unacceptable that one in 16 people pick up a bug in the nation’s hospitals, that 5,000 patients die each year as a result of a superbug and that infections such as MRSA and C. difficile contribute to another 15,000 deaths annually. Although data shows that England has one of the lowest rates of infection in Europe per in-patient treated, and Department of Health figures show that MRSA and C. difficile rates are the lowest ever since mandatory surveillance began, the fact that some 800 patients a day pick up an infection from the staff themselves or from dirty equipment, is unacceptable, isn’t it? Checking into in my local health centre last week, I used a touch screen computer to let the receptionist know I’d arrived. Then sitting down in the waiting room, I thought about all the ‘nasties’ on the magazines set out for people to read, and on the children’s books and toys provided to keep the little ones amused as they wait, as well as on the arms of the chairs and the handles of the doors to the consulting rooms. I didn’t notice any hand gel available for our use and nor did I see any signs warning us about the dangers of cross-contamination. I did, however, see lots of slightly dark greasy patches around the walls where people rest their heads while waiting to see their GP’s, which didn’t make me feel very comfortable! Sadly, with so little money available for regular, thorough cleaning of every surface in the healthcare environment, and healthcare professionals so overloaded with work that sometimes some of them neglect to wash their hands between treating different patients, I can’t help feeling that we’re going to end up fighting a losing battle when it comes to really making an impact on healthcare acquired infections… Please get in touch either by emailing me or posting a comment on our Facebook page. www.facebook.com/Cleanzine You can also follow us on Twitter @cleanzine Yours, This Week's News
Doctors, nurses and other healthcare professionals can follow simple actions to bring down infection rates in the NHS, says The National Institute for Health and Care Excellence. Around 300,000 people get an infection while being cared for within the NHS in England each year. These healthcare associated infections include pneumonia and infections of the lower respiratory tract (22.8%), urinary tract infections (17.2%) and surgical site infections (15.7%) [i]. Deadly bacteria invades US communities—MRSA infections jump 55%, warns Clearstream Officials at Clearstream, who previously spoke out about MRSA’s prevalence in athletic facilities, are now warning of the infection’s spread to communities. Historically, MRSA infections were relegated to sick patients in hospitals and healthcare facilities, but the ever-resistant bacteria is now present within communities and increasingly infecting otherwise healthy children and adults. In a 2013 report released by the US Centers for Disease Control, researchers established a 10% per year rise in MRSA infections in children from 2005 - 2010, and the proportion of those cases involving community-associated MRSA jumped by 55%. Study demonstrates that antibacterial soaps can reduce risk of foodborne illness Newly published research in the Journal of Food Protection, shows that the use of antibacterial soaps can reduce the spread of harmful bacteria (which often leads to foodborne illness) more effectively than using non-antibacterial soaps.
The research, published in the peer-reviewed Journal of Food Protection (Vol. 77, No. 4, 2014, pp. 574-582), used new laboratory data, together with simulation techniques, to compare the ability of non-antibacterial and antibacterial products to reduce the risk of the infectious disease shigellosis, which is often spread during food preparation.
