Products SCA delivers binding offer to acquire Georgia-Pacific's European tissue operations SCA has delivered a binding offer to acquire Georgia-Pacific's European tissue operations, with sales in 2010 amounting to EUR 1.25bn (SEK 11.9bn). The offered price is EUR 1.32bn (SEK 12.6bn). Georgia-Pacific's acceptance of this offer is subject to consultations with works councils where appropriate. Ecolab, Nalco shareholders approve merger Shareholders from both Ecolab and Nalco Holding Company overwhelmingly approved the merger of the two companies yesterday. The merger will create a global leader in water, hygiene and energy technologies and services, offering premier product solutions, what is claimed to be the industry's largest and best-trained sales and service force, coverage in more than 160 countries, and combined 2011 annualised sales of more than $11 billion. Study highlights serious problem of hospital-acquired infections in Africa Research funded by the Wellcome Trust has highlighted the scale of the problem of hospital-acquired infections in sub-Saharan Africa. The study, published today in the 'Lancet', suggests that bloodstream infections acquired while in care might contribute to one in every 20 deaths that occur in children in hospitals in the region. Sale proposed of Fiberweb's hygiene business to Petropar Fiberweb has announced that it and its wholly-owned subsidiary, Fiberweb Holdings, has entered into binding agreements for the sale of the hygiene business to Brazilian-based company Petropar for US$286 million (approximately £179 million). Hygiene issues at Indian hospital exacerbated by huge volume of visitors The cleaning programme at Gauhati Medical College & Hospital, in the large eastern Indian city of Guwahati, is being severely disrupted by the huge volume of visitors - estimated at some 2000 - 3000 each day with many staying overnight to be with their loved ones. This is leading to a rapid spread of infection as many of these visitors ignore the rules and regulations regarding cleanliness and hygiene. Start the New Year with some training! The Institute of Inspection, Cleaning & Restoration Certification (which as we reported in a recent issue of Cleanzine, is currently being rebranded to become 'The Clean Trust') has published a new schedule of training and certification courses for those wishing to upgrade their skills in 2012. It features four Shenandoah University Dance Conservatory students performing a creative interpretation of the use of RCP's new filter mopping system, at the recent ISSA/Interclean tradeshow in Las Vegas. Catching bugs at Karachi hospital Patients are complaining that they are catching infections as a result of the filthy conditions of the beds and a lack of proper hygiene at the Burn Centre of the Civil Hospital Karachi (CHK). The hospital's burns unit comprises 60 beds and treats some 900 patients each year.
Unlike in the UK, where we are encouraged to complain if healthcare standards are not up to scratch, the Pakistan Daily Times reports patients as saying: "If we complain about the poor condition of the hospital we are threatened with being thrown out!" As 2020 target nears, England's recycling record improves Households in England passed the recycling rate of 40% for the first time during 2010, according to recently released government figures.
The average recycling rate for English councils was 41.2% between April 2010 and March 2011, up from 39.7% in 2009. Recycling rates have been creeping up annually in the past decade, with the rate of progress slowing since 2008. New invention means Cardiff International pool is flushed with savings One of the UK's leading leisure centres is saving £ thousands in water charges by reducing the cost of spending a penny. Cardiff International Pool which attracts more than 700,000 visitors a year is among the first in the UK to use a simple new invention by Birmingham-based hygiene and cleaning specialist Chemex International. The scheme, which will be operational from early 2012, will help companies that hire migrant workers avoid the large fines imposed for employing workers who have forged or invalid work permits. New £125m fund to boost UK advanced manufacturing supply chains A new initiative of up to £125 million is being set up to improve the global competitiveness of UK advanced manufacturing supply chains, Business Secretary Vince Cable announced yesterday. The Initiative aims to help existing UK supply chains grow and achieve world class standards while encouraging major new suppliers to manufacture in the UK. Some NZ hotels "could be cleaner" report travellers Bedbugs, dirty loos and even unwashed sheets are problems some Kiwi travellers have encountered during their hotel stays in New Zealand, according to a Travelbug survey of 11,000 people, carried out by the Trade Me website, reports stuff.co.nz Some 32% of respondents revealed that their biggest hotel hygiene fear was discovering unwashed sheets, followed by an infestation of bedbugs (24%), and dirty loos (15%).
