Welcome to the Cleanzine - the original Cleaning & Hygiene industry e-news Read by industry professionals in 163 countries worldwide! Sat in my garden office producing this week’s Cleanzine - not quite fully recovered from last week’s exploits at the Pulire exhibition and conference, it’s occurred to me that while it’s pretty chilly today, it is at least dry! I’m missing the snow-capped mountains in the distance, as well as the Italian hospitality, the food and the beautiful sound of the Italian spoken word, but I’m not missing the torrential rain and thunderstorms (it’s so nice, as a Brit, to be able to say that)! While we’ve included some stories picked up from the show, we’ve also included news from the UK and other parts of the world. If you were exhibiting and we visited your stand and took some photo’s, don’t despair that we’ve forgotten to write about you, but keep an eye out for your coverage over coming weeks. We certainly discovered some great products on our trip and are looking forward to learning what our readers think about them... While thinking back over my time in Verona, I recalled just how good all the cleaners’ English is (or the several I spoke to anyway). I wish my Italian was as good! In the UK we’re always talking about – and catering for – the poor language skills and understanding of the cleaners here but I wonder whether we’re mistakenly talking and thinking historically rather than taking into account that a huge part of our cleaning workforce – in the larger companies anyway – is made up of teams of people from countries such as Spain and Portugal as well as many of the old Eastern Bloc countries, who are doing a great job and are easily able to converse with us. I wonder whether we’re doing these people a disservice or whether everything still needs to be ‘dumbed down’ as it always has been, for all the others that find instructions difficult to follow? I’d love your comments on these thoughts please… Please get in touch either by emailing me or posting a comment on our Facebook page. www.facebook.com/Cleanzine

Improving working lives for women in the cleaning, catering and care industries Women cleaners, catering staff and care workers could be set for a boost in job satisfaction and pay thanks to a new competitive fund from the UK Commission for Employment and Skills (UKCES). Two thirds of those earning low pay in the UK are women. One reason is that women are concentrated in low paying occupations and sectors. Females also make up 77.5% of part time employees, and there are big differences in pay for full time and part time workers.
