Cleanzine - the original Cleaning & Hygiene industry e-news

Read by industry professionals in 132 countries worldwide!

This week we carry details of a newly released report which reveals that more than one third of Americans have been personally affected by Healthcare Acquired Infections.

But wherever you go in the world you are likely to hear stories about people picking up these infections and now that we are all so wary of catching them, those responsible for hospital cleaning and hygiene are having to work extra hard to ensure that their facilities are not held responsible for unnecessary illness or death.

Another report covered in this week's Cleanzine shows that while the UK contract cleaning market is being squeezed slightly, it is being buoyed up by the demand for better cleanliness in our healthcare facilities.

The US survey reports that Americans are now putting more emphasis on infection rates and the technology employed by a hospital to combat infection, than they are other factors, when they're choosing where they should go for surgery - and with changes to the way the UK's National Health Service works, which will allow patients to choose the hospital that treats them, this factor is something that should be borne in mind.

The news in the UK is that hospital waiting lists are growing again. I can't help feeling that this is directly linked to the fact that with more attention being paid to proper cleaning and our HCAI rates falling dramatically as a consequence, people are becoming more confident about having hospital treatment and are now going ahead with non-essential visits that they might well have postponed otherwise through fear of catching something nasty.

At least now it will be clean when you get there!

Yours,

More than one third of Americans personally affected by HCAIs, reveals survey

Survey results released on Tuesday reveal that 34% of Americans have, or know someone who has, acquired an infection after being exposed to germs during a hospital stay. Moreover, the survey found that 64% of Americans do not think they would be better protected from germs in the hospital than in their daily lives.

The findings underscore that healthcare-associated infections are affecting perceptions of the safety of healthcare facilities and that new technologies are needed to help protect patients from hospital germs, including superbugs such as methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA), Pseudomonas aeruginosa (Pseudomonas) and E. coli. These superbugs can result in HCAIs, which occur in nearly two million patients each year and lead to extended hospital stays, additional health
