I believe it was six ISSA/Interclean Amsterdams ago that my Cleanzine leader focused on our need to avoid spreading germs by perhaps 'going European' - and instead of shaking hands with our industry colleagues at the show, we embrace them while planting a kiss on each cheek. My comments created a fair bit of feedback and subsequent discussion, but not nearly as much as the comments made this week by the British Olympic Association's chief medical officer, Dr. Ian McCurdie, when he suggested that for the same reason, our athletes refrain from shaking hands... Rather unsportsmanlike don't you think? But then so is the way the tickets were sold so that only the very wealthy were likely to be able to secure tickets for their favoured events without the possibility of subsequently being made bankrupt - and the £40,000 reputedly paid out to the designers of the Olympic logo rather than choosing the best design from, say, a competition open to the Nation's schoolchildren with a prize of a family ticket to the Games and a meeting with the British team - or the fact that badges have been made in China, sometimes by children working 11 hour days in unhealthy conditions. Of course the finished badges also have to be shipped to these shores. The most sustainable Games ever? Hmmm... While it can't do much about most of these issues, the cleaning industry does have a solution to the first - a way of helping to prevent the spread of infection without forcing the athletes to ignore the 'Olympic Spirit'. Cleanzine will be running a product feature in our 22nd March issue on hand sanitisers, so if your company manufactures these products (wherever you may be in the world) or if you have any comments to make on this leader or the questions it throws up, do please make sure you get in touch. Yours,
