Welcome to the
Cleanzine - the original Cleaning & Hygiene industry e-news Read by industry professionals in 163 countries worldwide! An article in the news last week highlighted the enormous difference screening expectant mothers for GBS (Group B Streptococcus) can make to the health of newborns – and the comments beneath the article (which I read online) all called for screening to be offered in the UK, as, I gather, it is in such countries as the US, Germany, France and Spain. The article focused on the results of a scheme trialled in London’s Northwick Park Hospital and the results echoed those of trials during which incoming patients, visitors – and, I believe – staff were tested for MRSA, the idea being that carriers could be treated with antibiotics to prevent further problems down the line. The NHS decision-makers were, as you can imagine, slated for denying blanket testing because of costs, but I wonder whether the growing resistance to antibiotics and the fear that one day they will be useless, has anything to do with it? Proper cleaning, as we all know, can save lives… Please get in touch either by emailing me or posting a comment on our Facebook page. www.facebook.com/Cleanzine You can also follow us on Twitter @cleanzine Yours, This Week's News
James Briggs announces acquisition of Premiere Products James Briggs, one of the UK's largest independent aerosol and speciality chemicals manufacturers, announced yesterday that it has acquired the business and assets of Premiere Products, the renowned manufacturer of branded and private label janitorial cleaning products. James Briggs can trace its roots back to 1830 and Premiere has a similarly strong heritage in the UK having been supplying products into both the commercial and consumer cleaning sectors since 1924. Premiere is one of the most respected and trusted names in the industry - distributing its products widely in the UK and Ireland, while also enjoying strong export sales across Europe and the Middle East, as well as into South East Asia. Pan European study shows that new rapid microbiological test kits should help fight against HAIs Idexx, a specialist in rapid microbiological test kits for water, has announced the publication of a peer reviewed Pan European study, which demonstrates that its Pseudalert testing system is well placed to help in the fight against Healthcare Acquired Infections. The paper concludes that the IdexxPseudalert/Quanti-Tray method, for the rapid detection of Pseudomonas aeruginosa (P. aeruginosa), produces confirmed results in a shorter time than the standard reference ISO 16266 and MoDW Part 8 PACN agar membrane filtration methods with no further confirmation steps. Hand hygiene monitoring specialist HyGreen, partners with Sinapsis Medical in Istanbul, Turkey Hand hygiene monitoring specialist HyGreen, announced yesterday a distribution agreement and partnership with Sinapsis Medical Technologies in Istanbul, Turkey. Each year, hundreds of millions of patients around the world are affected by healthcare-associated infections as organisms are transmitted from patient to patient via the unwashed hands of healthcare workers - as well as by other sources. To help combat these infections, the HyGreen system actively reminds healthcare workers if they forget to wash before patient contact and wirelessly records all hand hygiene events in the hospital. Rosemor makes moves in Milan's Malpensa Airport During trials over the past few days in Malpensa Airport, Milan, the Rosemor's Rotomac escalator cleaning machine produced such good cleaning results that the decision-makers have decided to purchase the latest version of the machine - the new Rotomac ET15B. "The beauty of this machine is its ability to automatically clean the step right to the edges, working on both the horizontal and the vertical part of the step simultaneously," explains Rosemor's Efi Rosen. Investment improves fortunes at The Laundrette A makeover and investment in new Girbau washers has transformed The Launderette in Stoke-on-Trent. Within weeks of opening, turnover has more than tripled, helping to deliver a rapid return on investment for investor Dave Robson, proprietor of Staffordshire Cleaning Solutions which took over the once-struggling business. Sound advice and support from Girbau UK before the refurbishment project started, together with a swift and seamless installation of the new equipment, helped kick-start the successful turnaround at The Laundrette. Designer of housework management app 'MoppedUp' comes clean about mid-life crisis solution For many people, reaching 40 is a time to splurge on a sports car or a motorbike. However for Malcolm Lewis, 39, a business analyst from London, the ticking clock signalled a time to create rather than spend. The useful result of Malcolm's mid-life creativity is 'MoppedUp', an ideal home cleaning solution, seamlessly connecting homeowners and their cleaning staff to create the perfect cleaning schedule. ISSA/Interclean Central & Eastern Europe 2015 finishes tomorrow afternoon The 2015 edition of the ISSA/Interclean Central & Eastern Europe exhibition ends tomorrow and with several Eastern European representations such as Neovision, Cormen, Dozit Plus, Fre-Pro and Zenit from the Czech Republic; Bokk Paper, Euro-Clear and Delta Clean from Hungary; Plasta, JSC BS Chemical and Higeja from Lithuania, and Roskosmetika from the Ukraine, attendees can expect a compelling overview of the Central & Eastern European cleaning sector. The industrial and institutional cleaning chemicals market in India is witnessing increasing adoption in commercial, manufacturing, government and institutional end-use segments. In addition, increasing consumer awareness regarding foodborne diseases and microbial infections is also boosting the use of cleaning chemicals. The demand for industrial and institutional cleaning chemicals has been growing exponentially over the last five years, with continuing growth being witnessed in the food & beverage processing and healthcare sectors. Matrix makes easy work of training in steam cleaning procedures and machine set up We all know how important it is to get the best out of any cleaning machine, and using any type of cleaning machine correctly is all down to the training being delivered professionally and accurately. This can be a very costly exercise - especially if the machine has been supplied by a company that is located a long distance away from where the machine is to be used. UK cleaners have got their union involved in a couple of disputes this week, with one group currently on strike (unless the strike action has been averted between writing this piece and Cleanzine's subsequent broadcast). In the first dispute, some 100 bin lorry drivers for Barking & Dagenham Council Environmental Services department were due to take strike action from 06:00 today until 22:00 tomorrow in a dispute over a £1,000 a year cut in contractual pay arising from what the union claims is the council cutting corners on the safety of refuse vehicles and those providing frontline services while creating four new "invisible posts that pay six figure salaries." Some 10,000 members of the Federation of General & Special Workers in Iceland (SGS) are to strike in an attempt to win an increase in the minimum wage. The workers - 32% of whom work in cleaning services provision and tourism, will begin a series of stoppages next week, culminating in a general strike on 26th May. Voter turn-out was just over 50%, but 94.6% of those voted in favour of the measure. Should shops provide washroom facilities for their customers? Gillian Kemp, leader of the ‘Truckers Toilets UK Campaign’ asked readers of the Public Toilets UK newsletter last month whether there should be customer washrooms in shops. “Two main comments were made,” she tells us: (1) Shops selling food and drink to be consumed on the premises should have a customer loo available – nothing fancy; just a clean loo and wash basin with toilet tissue, soap and drying facilities The Cleanzine Archive Search We keep an extensive archive of news stories and product information that have featured in past issues of The Cleanzine. Entering its 26th year, the 2015 Clean Britain Scheme was launched at the Imperial War Museum, Duxford last week by the Chartered Institution of Wastes Management. We have Mail: a Mitie big success! Hi Jan, Thanks for making those amendments to the article*, we've had statistics from The Cleaning Show who sent out the original email and they had over 5000 clicks on the link, with only 500 of them coming from their email, so potentially 4500 came from The Cleanzine which is great news. I know that initially the link in the email didn't work so I just wondered if you had feedback from people who said they couldn't access it. If so, would you consider running the story again in the next edition of The Cleanzine? We can always provide new copy to keep the story fresh.
