There was so much to like about the Genie XS scrubbing machine and we could understand why the crowds watching the demonstration appeared mesmerised: the little machine is so easy to manoeuvre that it looked almost like the operator’s dance partner!

One of the first assignments I had to undertake when I joined the publication Cleaning & Hygiene Today in 1992, was write up a visit my then colleague had made to Staples Disposables a few weeks previously. My introduction into the cleaning industry was a fascinating one as I’d had no idea until then about how cleaning chemicals were formulated or how important it was to use them (and dilute them) according to the manufacturer’s instructions.
It wasn’t until I visited 3M's technical centre some time later that I got first-hand experience of this, when I had the chance to experiment with some cleaning chemicals and a mop, and saw for myself how difficult the job can become when you try and achieve a better result by overdosing on the chemical.
Those who think cleaning is easy and that people don’t need to be trained, need to think again!
What caused me to reminisce about my early days in the industry? Rumours that Staples Disposables was being sold. I’ve just spoken to Andrew Staples, the managing director of the company, who assures me that it will be very much ‘business as usual’ for customers. The full story is below.
Look out for more breaking industry news in next week’s issue!
Finally, if you’re one of our 100,000-plus readers who’ve had to wait longer than usual over the past couple of weeks for your issue of Cleanzine to arrive, please accept our apologies. We’re just getting to grips with our new list filtration and distribution software which will eventually improve the speed and efficiency of distribution, but which is currently in the early stages. We’re happy to say that things should be back to normal by next week.
Please get in touch either by emailing me or posting a comment on our Facebook page. www.facebook.com/Cleanzine

Staples Disposables, one of the leading independent UK paper convertors, has entered a partnership that will see the ‘Away From Home’ divisions - which consist of hygiene paper, catering disposables and professional cleaning chemicals - taken over on 19th June and split into ‘Staples Away from home’ and ‘Staples Chemicals.’
Staples has a long established history in paper converting and chemical blending; the company has been trading for over 40 years and is a founder member of the CHSA soft tissue standard.

A new and improved COSHH e-tool has been launched, aimed at those working in the catering and hospitality sector. Enhancements include the incorporation of Hazard (H) statements to comply with CLP Regulations in line with the Global Harmonisation System (GHS) of classification and labelling.
COSHH Essentials sets out basic advice on what to do to control exposure to hazardous substances in the workplace. It takes the form of straightforward advice in 'factsheets' called 'control guidance sheets'. There are two types of sheets, industry-specific 'direct advice sheets' and 'generic control guidance sheets.'
Germany is the largest market in Europe for commercial cleaning systems and cleaning chemicals, and Berlin, the venue for the CMS 2015 trade show, is at the heart of this market, which is worth billions of Euros.
It therefore follows that the list of those who have applied to exhibit at this year’s CMS 2015 Berlin – Cleaning.Management.Services (22nd – 25th September) reads like a who’s who of manufacturers of cleaning machinery and cleaning products.
The move coincides with the appointment of Niall McClintock as business development manager, with extensive experience supplying polythene bags to the packaging trade.
The Alpha is a steam-only machine, available in 4.5 bar and 8 bar pressure, with a permanently fitted hose and reduced set of accessories that come stored in their own foam insert compartment.
Aimed at Metsa Tissue customers selling washroom products and those involved in facilities management and/or contract cleaning, the Academy provides an intensive day of Katrin training for small groups of people. The content is very hands on and along the way, attendees have the chance to practice using their knowledge information in a live, but non-customer environment.
This year is the 40th anniversary of East Anglia’s leading contract cleaning company, Monthind Clean. While there are lots of celebratory events planned, the company is not dwelling on the past; it views the anniversary as a springboard to even greater success.
Partner Tony Felgate (pictured) explains: “The company was founded by Christine Beedle MBE, and her hard work and dedication meant she was able to sell the company to Tony Clarke in 2000, boasting a very healthy turnover of £3.5 million.
The digital event guide for the upcoming Facilities Show is now available. The guide lists all exhibitors participating at the event, along with a full programme of speakers, theatres and the not-to-be-missed activity taking place across the show floor.
