Last Friday in Brussels, the European Commission and the European Agency for Safety & Health at Work (EU-OSHA) in cooperation with the Netherlands EU Presidency, launched a two-year Europe-wide campaign: Healthy Workplaces for All Ages. Focusing on sustainable work and workplace safety and health in the context of the ageing workforce, the campaign provides a timely reminder that the younger workers of today are the older workers of tomorrow.

Cleanzine - the original Cleaning & Hygiene industry e-news

Well – it’s finally upon us… One of the cleaning industry’s eagerly anticipated highlights – ISSA/Interclean Amsterdam, kicks off on Tuesday morning and it will look nothing like the images you see here, which were posted on the organiser’s Facebook page a week ago. The halls will be packed from floor (and in some cases) to ceiling with the latest offerings from more than 650 leading global brands and the aisles filled with some 28,000 visitors from 130 countries over the four days the event takes up.
Am I the only one who thinks the pictures make the halls look so much smaller than they actually are? When you’re walking the floor, it feels as if the show stretches for miles. There’s always so much to see, so many people to talk to and not enough time to do all you need to.
This is the first year in the 14 Cleanzine has been broadcasting, that we won’t be producing a ‘Show Daily’ and I have to say that I’m relieved that for once I’ll be able to spend more time looking around the stands and enjoying the show, without having to worry that I’ve got (or perhaps not got) enough copy for the following morning’s issue. John and I will also be able to enjoy our evenings in Amsterdam with our many industry friends and colleagues from around the world, without having to head back to our respective rooms early to get on with our work. We may have been bleary eyed throughout the last seven Amsterdam shows but I can assure you it wasn’t excess alcohol and a night on the tiles which had made us that way! I for one am thoroughly looking forward to the change…
If you’re attending the show, I hope it’s everything you want it to be and please make sure you say ‘hello’ if you see us there. We always like meeting Cleanzine’s readers and learning about what industry issues are important to you.
Please get in touch either by emailing me or posting a comment on our Facebook page. www.facebook.com/Cleanzine

This Week's News
With just five days to go to the ISSA/Interclean Amsterdam 2016 exhibition, RAI Amsterdam reports that registrations are running strongly ahead of registrations received for the last show at the same point in the build-up to the event.
While the largest number of visitor registrations continues to originate from Europe, this year the largest percentage growth has been seen from visitors registering from Africa - in particular Egypt, Nigeria and Tunisia. There is also a confirmed delegation of 51 South African visitors.
"Amsterdam maintains a high level of confidence and loyalty from visitors and exhibitors from around the world and has become a must for cleaning professionals worldwide," says Thais Rodriguez, explaining the large Spanish contingent.
At this year's ISSA/Interclean trade fair in Amsterdam, on a trade stand the size of 9 tennis courts, Karcher will be presenting two Innovation Award Finalists alongside 125 other innovative machines and services. In advance of the show, the team from Karcher Netherlands have been helping prepare the city for the influx of some 29,000 pairs of feet. You can see how here: https://youtu.be/
Among the high-performance cleaning technologies on its 770-square-metre stand will be the BRC 40/22 C carpet cleaner, which features a brush head that rotates through 200°, making the machine exceptionally manoeuvrable. This eliminates the need to clean in parallel lanes, thereby achieving a time saving of up to 30%. The BRC 40/22 C is one of Karcher's twin nominations for the Innovation Award.
The Advocate reports that infection prevention & control nurse Heather Craigie (pictured) is manning a stall at the entrance of the Mersey Community Hospital in Latrobe, Tasmania, today, with a view to inviting visitors and staff to use the alcohol-based hand rub provided at the hospital, and then use a special UV illuminate gel to test their hands to see how well they have tackled the germs.
"What better way to launch our new GumBusters GB1 into North America than a feature on national television with a slot on CBS News!" says OspreyDeepclean.
"And check out our latest blockbuster starring the GB1 on Youtube!"
Victorian tiled floors can be really beautiful but sadly they're often not maintained as they should be... They eventually become so dilapidated that the building owners feel they have no choice but to rip them up and replace them with something easier to maintain.
There is another option though. The team at Heritage Tiling aims to restore as many historic tiled floors and walls as it can, thus enabling the tiles to be viewed and enjoyed once more.
Labels that state an approximate length, width, count or weight cannot be trusted according to the Cleaning & Hygiene Suppliers' Association. The only way buyers of cleaning and hygiene products can guarantee they get what they pay for is to buy product stamped with the Marque of the CHSA's Manufacturing Standards Accreditation Schemes.
As well as auditing members the CHSA's Accreditation Schemes for Soft Tissue, Plastic Refuse Sacks and Industrial Cotton Mops, the CHSA's Independent Inspector, Martin Yates, also regularly spot checks non-member products. He is raising this issue after noticing a growing number of products labeled with only 'approximate' dimension, count and weight.
Bed bugs are known for hiding in dark, sheltered spaces, allowing them to often go undetected before turning into large-scale infestations. Once your establishment has a reputation for harbouring bed bugs it will be hard to shake off - even if you get rid of the bed bugs themselves.
The Raid Bed Bug Detector & Trap is a new early-detection product, which enables hotel patrons and the like to expose evidence of bed bugs before an infestation occurs.
New contract awards keep coming as London City based Principle Cleaning has recently won a cleaning contract with Vinson & Elkins. Based at the award winning 20 Fenchurch Street, The Vinson & Elkins' London office opened in 1971, making it one of the oldest London offices of any US law firm.
A contract with Barings Asset Management at 155 Bishopsgate London also started recently and is for an initial two-year contract. This prestigious well known investment bank with high profile client meeting and dining areas has tasked Principle Cleaning staff to provide daily cleaning including specialist periodic carpet cleaning and kitchen deep cleaning, as well as window cleaning in addition to housekeeping and porterage services.
A leading name in cleaning equipment is strengthening its support for the national and international facilities management companies, contract cleaning and third party logistics (3PL) sectors with the creation of a new strategic accounts team. The move will enable Hako to deliver more specialised support to customers in important markets for the company as it continues its UK growth.
Led by Sarah Powell, who has worked at Hako for the past four years as strategic account manager and now director, the team aims to bring a dynamic new approach to the management of existing accounts and securing new contracts.
The use of controlled dosing technology to enable the end user to accurately dilute a chemical concentrate at the point of use, providing a ready-to-use cleaning or disinfecting solution, has the potential to dramatically transform the environmental, quality and safety standard of many of today's cleaning products - but most importantly in-use cleaning costs.
There has always been a concern that when the batteries in any electronic dispensing system run low, there is the risk that before the maintenance team has a chance to replace them, washroom users will be unable to access sufficient soap to clean their hands properly. Well no more.
Darwinsure is a new online insurance scheme designed to provide quick quotes, competitive prices and secure payment for small businesses seeking specialist cover.
BPI Recycled Products has achieved Zero Waste to Landfill certification from Valpak at three of its manufacturing sites across the UK. BPI Recycled Products' manufacturing sites gained ISO 14001:2004 accreditation for environmental management and each site put controls in place to reduce the amount of waste they were generating.
The ongoing success of the company is set to continue throughout 2016 and, in response, it will be increasing its site with additional parking to cope with increased demand from both new and existing customers.

Supplying quality products, backed up with the delivery of customer service excellence, has always been part of the company's ethos and continues to be key to the company's success.

Recognising this, and the need to continually innovate within its business operations, Futures Supplies has now linked up with independent feedback provider Feefo as an efficient means of gathering genuine customer feedback to continually improve its customers' experiences.
Further to your leader last week, as a resident of Newbury I can report that West Berkshire Council seems to have seen the error of its ways and I am happy to report that the toilets were opened on the Wharf last week, funded on temporary basis by Newbury Town Council.
So the coaches are still stopping!

Truckers Toilets UK tells us that some cities in the US are trialling mobile toilet / shower units to ascertain whether more should be introduced, to alleviate the problems of drivers needing the bathroom, but finding that they have 'nowhere to go'.
"The beauty of using a mobile unit would mean that different areas could be trialled and usage numbers assessed," suggests TTUK's Gillian Kemp. "This is active research which is beneficial at the same time. In the Denver trial the mobile unit is available from 12 midday to 12 midnight complete with an attendant. Worth considering? TTUK is investigating further...
