* refuse-collectors.jpgI’m always saying that cleaning’s a thankless task but two recycling centre workers have been showered with praise this week for searching through rubbish to locate and retrieve a woman’s £20,000 life savings that had been accidentally thrown away by her family during a clear-out. Tony Scanlon and Kenny McAdam, who work at Dalmoak Recycling Centre in Scotland’s Dunbartonshire, spent two hours sifting through binbags of rubbish for the cash, which the woman, in her 80s, had secretly kept in Bisto gravy tins.

I wonder if they said: "Ah! Bisto!" when they uncovered the tins?

According to the report by the BBC, the pair are no strangers to these unusual searches, having previously retrieved a wedding dress, wedding rings and car keys. Local heroes then!

Something else that brought a smile to my face was news that Poole Park West Gate public toilets are to be closed from 3rd February. Not permanently, I'm pleased to say, but for around six weeks while they're refurbished inside and out. The work will include replacing all toilets, cubicles and lighting, as well as external repairs to the block.

* public-toilets-Refurb-Poole.jpg
The clever council is ensuring that people will still feel able to visit the area. It's installing portable toilets while the work's carried out and publicising the fact that visitors can also use nearby toilets at The Ark (open 10:00 to 18:00 seven days a week).

I'm well aware of the pressures local authorities are under when it comes to budgets, which means that far too many shut down our public facilities for good - and with an aging population and a crisis on our high streets that's a dire decision to make. The fact that Poole is not only managing to keep toilets open but is also refurbishing them, proves it can be done. My question is, if some councils can see how crucial it is to provide good toilet facilities, why can't the rest of them?
