Cleanzine - the original Cleaning & Hygiene industry e-news

Read by industry professionals in 163 countries worldwide!

The dust has settled on the Amsterdam Rai and all the ISSA/Interclean exhibition stand paraphernalia will have been packed away and shipped out, while those who had to oversee the breakdown will have moved on to another event in a different part of the world (since some appear to spend their lives moving from one cleaning show or the like, to another).

The Amsterdam event has got so big that stand staff will only have seen a fraction of it, while those who were there to walk, visit and discover, are no doubt regretting the fact that they didn’t get to see everyone and everything they had planned to, as John and I are. Some we met in the aisles on the final afternoon had not been aware that there were other halls to visit – they thought they’d covered everything. But by then it was too late.

There’s always 2018 though…

As usual, the show was a resounding success. When you consider its sheer scale, the fact that the organisers managed to issue a closing statement detailing visitor numbers and countries of origin before most of us had even arrived at the airport for our trips home, is testament to the hard work and professionalism of the Dutch. They deserve to be congratulated.

Cleaning shows all seem to have a hotly-contested Innovation Awards programme and these tend to involve a lot of hard work on the part of the entrants (and sometimes an entry fee) and some deep consideration from the judges, tasked with determining the winners. Having helped judge the Pulire Awards at the Verona show, John and I are aware of the commitment that this involves.

Having once again enjoyed ourselves out in Amsterdam, John and I discussed some of the innovation we felt had made (or would make) an impact and I suggested we have our own lighthearted Innovation Awards what won’t require any extra work from the contenders. John came up with the name: The Quirkies – and you can read about them here…

Tragedy of well cleaning exercise

If anything underlines our need to stop wasting water (and find ways to ensure that everyone has enough) and that cleaning needs to be carried out responsibly and carefully, it's the news that five young men lost their lives cleaning a well in the Dhanak Colony of Nidana Village in Haryana's Jind, in northern India.

The five - most of whom were in their teens and early twenties, died after inhaling poisonous gas inside the well.

Don't use the cups!

Visitors to one of Beijing's hotels have been warned not to drink from the tea cups in the bedrooms, following a horrifying discovery by one guest about the way they are cleaned...

The South China Morning Post reported that the whistleblower made his grim discovery while dropping off his luggage in his room, which was still being cleaned after the departure of the previous guest, when he encountered the cleaning lady scrubbing the toilet bowl. He watched her finish this task before placing the brush she had been using, in the washbasin where two tea cups were being soaked in a blue solution.

Historic tiled floors restored to 'good as new' condition

* Victorian-floor-before-after.jpg
Victorian tiled floors can be really beautiful but sadly they're often not maintained as they should be... They eventually become so dilapidated that the building owners feel they have no choice but to rip them up and replace them with something easier to maintain.

There is another option though. The team at Heritage Tiling aims to restore as many historic tiled floors and walls as it can, thus enabling the tiles to be viewed and enjoyed once more.

You can't trust 'approximate'... Trust the CHSA Accreditation Scheme Marque

* CHSA-CM-std.jpg
Labels that state an approximate length, width, count or weight cannot be trusted according to the Cleaning & Hygiene Suppliers' Association. The only way buyers of cleaning and hygiene products can guarantee they get what they pay for is to buy product stamped with the Marque of the CHSA's Manufacturing Standards Accreditation Schemes.

As well as auditing members the CHSA's Accreditation Schemes for Soft Tissue, Plastic Refuse Sacks and Industrial Cotton Mops, the CHSA's Independent Inspector, Martin Yates, also regularly spot checks non-member products. He is raising this issue after noticing a growing number of products labeled with only 'approximate' dimension, count and weight.

Chemical dosing systems, whether manual dispensing pumps or electronic dosing units, have been around for years and are now a well-established part of any professional cleaning process.

The use of controlled dosing technology to enable the end user to accurately dilute a chemical concentrate at the point of use, providing a ready-to-use cleaning or disinfecting solution, has the potential to dramatically transform the environmental, quality and safety standard of many of today's cleaning products - but most importantly in-use cleaning costs.
