Well – it’s been quite a week, hasn’t it? This time last week, none of us could be sure about the outcome of the EU referendum and while the vote was split pretty much down the middle as the polls had predicted, no-one could have foreseen all the fallout & mud-slinging that’s followed. The four horses of the apocalypse haven’t galloped into town but with the battles still raging both amongst our leaders and their troops, and our social media contacts, one could perhaps be forgiven for thinking that they had!
I’ve a feeling that things aren’t going to calm down for a while yet, too.
The cleaning industry in the UK is wonderfully supported by a brilliant workforce very often made up almost entirely of one ethnic minority or another. It may be a Portuguese workforce, for example. When one employee leaves, the supervisor simply puts the word out amongst the local community and a replacement is found almost immediately. These groups work well together, socialise together and many are often part of the same, extended family. They ensure continuity and the smooth running of the contracts on which they’re employed.
It hadn’t occurred to me that many of these people are worried about their futures because of the way the vote went, but these fears have emerged on social media.
In looking for a picture today I came across a thoughtful post on Incentive FM’s website, which other contractors (if they haven’t done already) might like to take note of. It read:
“Dear Colleagues, Given the surprising result of last night’s referendum I just wanted to assure all of our staff from the UK, EU and wider world that the Incentive FM Group will continue to value all members of our team equally. You can be safe in the knowledge that we will work hard to ensure that good staff who have worked hard for us over many years will have a place in our business both now and in the future. Kind regards, Martin Reed, Incentive FM Group Managing Director.”
The British Cleaning Council has also issued a statement, which you can read below.
As I’ve said many times previously, I’m proud of our industry and the way we all work together, whichever part of the world we hail from and whatever part we play in keeping the world clean and hygienic.
Long may the cooperation and cameraderie continue!

This Week's News
After months of campaigning the British people decided last Thursday that the United Kingdom should leave the EU. The British Cleaning Council took the decision some months ago to remain neutral, and that is still the case now we know the result.
However, with so much political and economic uncertainty around, it is important to reiterate that the BCC remains committed to its core values and will continue to champion the UK cleaning industry at every opportunity.
Having seen numerous posts with worried questions regarding a myriad of topics such as passports, driving licences, European spouses etc. and also heard during the Brexit campaign that if we voted to leave virtually all existing legislation would be thrown in the bin, leaving us defenceless and at the mercy of unscrupulous business owners, hell bent on exploiting all staff and operating in contravention to every shred of legislation that existed under the EU.
Sealed Air's Diversey Care division announced this week expanded capabilities for its Taski IntelliTrail fleet management solution. Facilities managers can now mount the system on both Taski and competitors' floorcare machines, as well as non-scrubber assets such as vacuum cleaners, cleaning carts and burnishers, to track their entire fleet.
Additionally, IntelliTrail's new Monthly Fleet Summary Report proactively highlights areas in need of attention and even suggests improvements to benefit the bottom line.
Ecolab has made a binding offer to acquire Laboratoires Anios from co-owners Bertrand and Thierry Letartre and private investment company Ardian.

Based in Lille, France, it has a presence in more than 85 countries and employs approximately 700 people worldwide. Sales were approximately €220 million ($245 million) in 2015.
Qleen's easy-connect system modules offer perfect solutions for cleaning glass, building facades, solar power systems, vehicles and any number of applications. They are more efficient than traditional cleaning processes, because large areas can be cleaned in a significantly more productive and cost-effective manner.
The latest QleenProfiII system uses the tried and trusted PuraQleen water treatment technology, which removes all impurities from normal tap water, transforming it into potent, lime-free, 'pure' water.
OspreyDeepclean US distributor; Anthony Mule of GumBusters, New York, was recently invited to demonstrate his machines' prowess at the feet of one of the World's most iconic structures - the Statue of Liberty on Ellis Island, the US.
"We went through security, K9 bomb-sniffing dogs... the works," Anthony told us. "We transported our equipment - a GB1 and a ProVap Gum Cart - on a boat to Ellis Island to clean up and bust gum at the Statue of Liberty.
There are many European standards already in place, with the most important being BS EN 14885:2015 ('Chemical disinfectants and antiseptics. Application of European Standards for chemical disinfectants and antiseptics'). This standard outlines that all disinfectants should be tested using a three phase method, where each successive phase simulates in-use conditions more closely.

Restaurants with low food hygiene ratings are risking their survival, with 61% of consumers saying they'll boycott such establishments, according to research carried out by food safety technology Checkit.
The organisation warns that 18,379 restaurants, takeaways, sandwich/coffee shops, hotels and pubs in England, Wales and Northern Ireland are at risk, as they currently have a Food Standards Agency Food Hygiene Rating of two or below, meaning they require improvement to their practices and processes.
Bunzl announced yesterday that it has purchased Belgian janitorial supply company Polaris Chemicals SPRL.
Based near Brussels, the company sells a variety of products from such manufacturers as Lucart, Unger, Numatic, Floorpul, GreenCare, Ecolab and Vikan, to name just a few, to both redistributors and end users, including government and education establishments, retirement homes and cleaning companies, throughout the Brussels and Walloon regions of Belgium. Revenue in 2015 was £3 million.
As from the 4th July 2016, the Disposables UK name will disappear and the company will trade as Northwood Hygiene Products. The experienced merger and acquisition management team at Northwood has ensured that, as ever, customer requirements have taken priority, so any service disruption during the changeover has been minimal.
