Cleanzine - the original Cleaning & Hygiene industry e-news

'Mia recycles' is a series of short videos produced to help West Sussex residents cut the confusion of recycling. It's a brilliant idea and although I have no idea how much it will have cost to make the series; if it is watched, remembered and acted upon it will limit damage to the environment and help keep the Landfill Tax part of the Council Tax down, so residents will either be better off financially, or they'll be able to enjoy better facilities (well, in an ideal world, anyway)! What's not to like about that?

* mia-recycles.jpg

The videos follow Mia around the home as she educates her family on which items can and cannot be recycled in the bathroom, the kitchen and on a takeaway night. Mia will be ending the series by visiting the Ford Materials Recycling Facility to show what happens to recycling once it has been collected. Again, seeing what happens to things we recycle is more likely to encourage us to do the right thing, as by being invited into the MRF we're being given ownership, as it were.

The videos can now be watched via www.westsussex.gov.uk with a new video added every Sunday until 6th October. If you're responsible for your local authority's waste collection and recycling, it might be worth taking a look.

Won't it be wonderful when, one day, we're all going to be following the same recycling procedures, wherever we are?

Recycle Week 2019 takes place next week from 23rd - 29th September. The theme is: 'Recycling. It's in our own hands' and you can find out more at www.wrap.org.uk

In 2018, people were motivated to care about plastics in a way they never have before. Sustainability is firmly on the agenda and the public is looking to organisations to help solve major environmental issues. That makes Recycle Week a greater opportunity than ever to change people's recycling behaviours while gaining positive publicity and building your organisation's reputation.

2019 is the year of the environmental activist. We've seen this through protests and marches. From Greta Thunberg to Our Planet and Sir David Attenborough - environmental concerns have never been so front of mind for the nation. Let's capitalise on this as it's a golden opportunity for us to inspire and support citizens to take action and make recycling the new norm.
